CLARION — Sometimes you thrive on the fall, and sometimes you, well, fall because of the fall.

The Webster City wrestling team suffered the latter in its season debut last night.

The Lynx gave up 12 pins on the night and suffered a pair of North Central Conference dual losses, 48-30 to Iowa Falls-Alden and 38-37 to Clarion-Goldfield-Dows.

With so many new faces in the lineup, Lynx head coach Chad Hisler admitted he was unsure of what to expect, but he knows his grapplers need to be better from underneath.

“I didn’t know what to expect because we have so many new faces, but the pins and bonus points were killers,” he said. “We had some kids get out of position and go to their backs, and once you’re there it’s hard to get off. We have to do a better job of staying in position before that.”

Four WCHS wrestlers went through the two duals unscathed. Tenth-ranked freshman Camron Phetxoumphone (106 pounds), second-ranked senior Drake Doolittle (120), sixth-ranked senior Caleb Olson (195/220) and senior Hunter Collicott (220/195) all went 2-0 with five of the victories coming with bonus points attached.

Phetxoumphone had to wait to get a sweat going, but it was worth it. Following a forfeit against the Cadets, he reeled off 21 points in just 2:19 for a technical fall win over the Cowboys’ Kaeden Langfitt.

“He looked good,” Hisler said of Phetxoumphone. “It was a great start for him.”

Doolittle inched closer to the program’s all-time wins record with ease. He decked Iowa Falls-Alden’s Evan Ackerman in just 48 seconds and then toyed with CGD’s Garrett Seaba for a little more than two periods before turning out the lights.

Olson also had a pin against IF-A, as he needed just 2:17 to dispose of Sha Loewen. He moved up against CGD and worked over Kain Nelson, but had to settle for a 17-1 tech fall. The match-ending point came on a stalling call at the 4:57 mark.

Collicott took care of the Cadets’ Tanner Hoversten in 2:22 and then earned a methodical 5-0 decision over the Cowboys’ Camden Hanson.

“Hunter did a good job,” Hisler said. “He’s a returning district qualifier, so we expect that out of him. Drake and Caleb, they’re state qualifiers, so that’s what we expect from them as well.”

Carter Bedford (160) and Michael Gilbert (182) both secured one pin on the night for the Lynx. Chase Rattenborg (126) and Sean Godfredsen (152) had their hands raised on forfeits against CGD.

WCHS led IF-A 30-21 following Doolittle’s dominant showing, but the Cadets answered with five consecutive wins to close out the dual, four of them by fall.

Doolittle’s pin and Rattenborg’s forfeit against CGD made it 25-20 in the Lynx favor. CGD then reeled off three straight pins to clinch the win.

“We wrestled much better against Clarion than we did against Iowa Falls, but Iowa Falls is up and coming,” Hisler said.

CGD opened the meet by turning back IF-A, 42-36.

WCHS will face another stiff test on Saturday when it competes in the DC-G Mustang Invite in Grimes. Top-ranked (2A) Prairie City-Monroe will also be in the field.
