Grady says no-no on Senior Night, Hawks blast B-K
Senior right-hander fans eight, SH receives a hit or RBI from all nine starters
JEWELL — So, Garrett Grady, how did Senior Night treat you?
He may still be smiling three days later.
Playing on his home diamond at the Mike Penning Athletic Complex for the final time, the South Hamilton senior twirled the first no-hitter of his career against Belmond-Klemme on Monday. Grady, a right-hander, struck out eight against just two walks during the Hawks’ 15-0, 4-inning pasting of the Broncos.
“Garrett pitched really well,” South Hamilton head coach Kyle Galetich said. “I’m sure it probably ranks right up there with his best moments of high school, so I was really happy for him.”
For a little icing on top of the cake — Grady also went 2 for 3 with a RBI at the dish.
There were plenty of smiles to go around for South Hamilton (8-12), as all nine starters recorded either a hit or drove in a run. Sam Lewis joined Grady with two hits and the left-hander drove in four runs. Lewis smacked the game’s only extra-base hit — a fourth-inning double that plated two runs.
DJ Klonglan, CJ Hewitt, Cole Berg and Cade Balvanz all added singles. Klonglan scored four times and Balvanz collected two RBIs. The Balderas brothers, Zeke and Mateo, both drove in one run, as did Quinton Grove.
Belmond-Klemme (8-11) entered the contest on a four-game winning streak and was 6-1 over its last seven, but the Hawks erupted early with nine runs in the first inning when they sent 14 batters to the plate.
“We played well,” Galetich said. “We came out and did the things we needed to do.”
