SLUMP BUSTER: Hawks break out of funk against BCLUW

Mateo Balderas 3 for 5, 4 RBIs; brother Zeke cranks HR

BEAMAN — Kyle Galetich felt the weight of the world slowly lift off his shoulders with each hit that his South Hamilton baseball team produced here Tuesday night.

The frustration? Alleviated. The extended run of misfortune? Gone. The fun of the game? Back again.

The Hawks belted 14 hits and scored multiple runs in four innings in their 13-4 pasting of BCLUW in non-conference play. It was South Hamilton’s first victory since Memorial Day and ended a six-game slide.

“It was kind of what we needed going into the second half of our (Heart of Iowa) conference season,” Galetich, the Hawks’ head coach, said. “We hit the ball well, we fielded the ball well and (pitchers) DJ (Klonglan) and Cole (Berg) threw strikes.”

South Hamilton (4-7) moved in front for good with five runs in the second inning. BCLUW (6-7) countered with three in the bottom of the frame to pull within 6-4, but the Hawks reeled off seven unanswered runs over the final four innings.

Five players — Klonglan, CJ Hewitt, Mateo Balderas, Cade Balvanz and Quinton Grove — collected multiple hits. Balderas went 3 for 5 with a double and four RBIs. Hewitt was perfect in three plate appearances with a pair of two-baggers and one RBI. Klonglan plated two runs.

Zeke Balderas set the tone in the first inning when he took an Angus Callaway pitch and roasted it over the fence in left for a solo home run, his second of the season.

Sam Lewis added a base hit and two RBI.

Klonglan and Berg allowed a combined 10 hits to a potent BCLUW lineup. Klonglan went five innings en route to the win; he struck out two.

“They’re a pretty good hitting team,” Galetich said of the Comets. “It was good to get DJ back on the mound because it had been a couple weeks.”

South Hamilton returned home to take on Nevada last night.
