JEWELL — Lily Skartvedt certainly knows how to make an entrance.

Sidelined since June 8 following a collision in the outfield, the South Hamilton junior returned to the diamond Friday night and made her presence immediately known at the Mike Penning Athletic Complex.

Skartvedt led-off the sixth inning with a solo home run to break up a 3-3 tie and it ignited a three-run outburst to carry the Hawks past Prairie City-Monroe, 6-4, in Game 1 of a Heart of Iowa Conference doubleheader.

South Hamilton (9-12, 5-5 HOIC) carried the momentum into Game 2 where it roasted the Mustangs, 12-3. And it all began with Skartvedt’s bomb.

“The kid came out on fire and the home run was a no-doubter,” South Hamilton head coach Harry McMaken said of Skartvedt. “It’s what gave us the spark that we needed. It was great having her back.”

The Hawks cranked out 29 hits in the two-game set and received production up and down the lineup.

“It felt great and the girls fed off each other,” McMaken said. “For the most part, every girl on the team contributed something.”

Suspended because of weather back on June 6, Game 1 resumed with PCM (2-10, 2-9 HOIC) in front, 2-1.

Cortney Harris and Taylor Ratzke had three hits each in the opener. Harris roped a double and drove in two runs. Skartvedt, Breanne Diersen and Marla Grubb all added two hits.

South Hamilton poured it on early in the nightcap and led 7-2 after three innings.

Grubb and Harris went a combined 8 of 9 with four RBIs in the middle of the Hawks’ order. Harris found the gap again for a triple.

Diersen jump-started it at the top of the lineup, as she lashed three singles in four plate appearances and collected two RBIs. Kaylee Oskvig also drove in two runs, while Krista Swenson and Leah Jacoby both plated one.

Katie Johnson and Jessi Harms each earned a win in the circle. Johnson surrendered 13 hits in Game 1, while Harms limited the Mustangs to six in Game 2.

HAWKS WIN 2 OF 3 AT HOME TOURNEY: South Hamilton knocked off South Hardin, 11-1 in six innings, and Iowa Falls-Alden, 6-3 in eight innings, and finished 2-1 at its own tournament at the Mike Penning Athletic Complex in Jewell on Saturday.

The Hawks (11-13) lone loss came against Interstate 35, 9-3.

South Hamilton ripped 35 hits on the day, upping its two-day total to 64 following a doubleheader sweep of PCM on Friday.

Against IF-A, Taylor Ratzke provided the go-ahead two-run double in the eighth inning, and Breanne Diersen followed with a RBI single. Diersen went 4 for 5 in the game. Leah Jacoby and Katie Johnson had two hits each.

Marla Grubb went 3 for 4 with three RBIs, while Diersen and Cortney Harris had two hits and two RBIs against South Hardin. Jacoby and Kaylee Oskvig added two hits each.

Grubb and Harris both had two hits against I-35.

Johnson was the winning pitcher against South Hardin and Iowa Falls-Alden. On the day, she provided 15 innings of work and struck out nine batters.
