Down early, Cadets rally past WCHS boys
IOWA FALLS — Twenty-four hours after battling for 96 minutes in an overtime win over Clear Lake, the Webster City boys’ soccer team didn’t have enough left in the tank to prevail in another tight contest here Friday night.
After taking an early 1-0 lead, the Lynx gave up two unanswered goals and fell to Iowa Falls-Alden, 2-1. The two teams split the two-match season series.
“The effort was great, especially off the 96 minutes (on Thursday night),” WCHS head coach Craig Signorin said. “(IF-A) just wanted it a bit more.”
Jorge Alvavero put WCHS (7-7) in front less than four minutes into the match, as he rifled in a shot on a free kick with the help of Isaac Bernard, who shielded Cadets’ goalkeeper Jacob Beadle.
And then the Cadets’ Jaden Penning took over.
Penning scored the equalizer in the 31st minute on a counter attack.
“Our defense just stepped earlier than I would’ve liked, it gave them room to play in behind,” Signorin said. “They did well connecting.”
It remained 1-1 until the 69th minute when IF-A played a ball in behind to the end line. Penning was able to get past Tyler Bultena and then beat Lynx goalkeeper Carsen Johnson for the match-winner.
WCHS out-shot IF-A (5-6) 8-6, including 6-4 on frame.
The Lynx will be back at home this evening to host CAL on Senior Night. The match will get underway at 5:30 p.m.
