Colo-NESCO puts SH girls away with 38-17 second-half surge

COLO — It’s safe to say that Faith Vincent was feeling it Monday night.

Colo-NESCO’s junior guard lit up the scoreboard with 29 points and powered the Royals to a runaway 57-33 victory over South Hamilton in a non-conference contest.

Vincent splashed in seven 3-point baskets and went on a personal 8-0 run to bust open what was a tie game in the third quarter. Colo-NESCO (9-2) outscored South Hamilton (4-9) 38-17 in the second half.

“The story of the game came from beyond the arc,” South Hamilton head coach Mark Henderson said. “We struggled shooting from deep (the Hawks were just 1 of 11 from 3) and they had a girl make 7 of 10. Combine that with 26 (South Hamilton) turnovers and it’s hard to win.

“(Vincent) is a nice player.”

Colo-NESCO shot 49 percent from the field (22 of 45), compared to just 32 percent for South Hamilton (14 of 44).

Molly Barten added 14 points for the Royals.

Marla Grubb led the Hawks with 14 points and seven rebounds. Anna Moss pitched in six points, seven steals and two assists. Breanne Diersen finished with six points, six boards and four steals.

South Hamilton jumped out quickly and led the Royals 9-5 after one quarter. Colo-NESCO responded with a 14-7 second-quarter spurt to go up 19-16 at the intermission. The two teams were knotted up in the third when Vincent decided to take charge.

South Hamilton will be at home Friday evening to take on sixth-ranked (Class 3A) and Heart of Iowa Conference leader Nevada at 6 p.m. The four-time defending HOIC champion Cubs will bring a 44-game conference winning streak to Coach Jim Marsh Court in Jewell.
