Moss and Wintermote land spots on all-HOIC first team

Volkmann on second team, Grubb and Diersen honorable mention

WEBSTER CITY — A fourth-place finish in the Heart of Iowa Conference and a 20-win season was capped by five all-conference accolades for the South Hamilton softball team this week.

The Hawks, who saw their season end in a Class 2A regional semifinal this past Saturday, picked up a pair of first-team all-HOIC honors for senior shortstop Ady Wintermote and senior center fielder Alissa Moss. Taylor Volkmann, a sophomore pitcher, was named to the second squad. Marla Grubb, the team’s junior designated hitter, and Breanne Diersen, a sophomore catcher, were honorable mention choices.

Conference champion Collins-Maxwell-Baxter and runner-up Prairie City-Monroe both had three first-team selections, highlighted by the league’s elite pitchers — Raiders’ freshman Mikayla Hogue and Mustangs’ senior Kayla Jennings.

Wintermote, a multiple-time first-team selection, and Moss were the unquestioned leaders for South Hamilton throughout the season.

Moss was arguably the league’s top defensive outfielder, and the Hawks’ lead-off stick also hit .414 with one home run and 20 RBI. She scored 43 runs, which was tops in the conference, and swiped 16 bases.

Wintermote’s six home runs and 33 RBI both ranked second on the HOIC hierarchy. She put together a .347 batting average and .633 slugging percentage.

After equally sharing the South Hamilton pitching duties in 2016, Volkmann ascended to the ace of the staff during her sophomore campaign. She put together an 11-7 record and 2.29 ERA. She struck out 140 batters, second in the league behind only Houge, in 113 innings of work.

Volkmann also hit .340 and drove in 16 runs.

Grubb led the Hawks with a .422 batting average. Hitting primarily in the No. 3 slot in the lineup, she registered 19 RBI.

Diersen hit at a .367 clip and she also finished with 19 RBI.
