W-G pulls away late, hands Lynx loss in baseball opener

WOODWARD — Trailing 5-4 after 41⁄2 innings, Woodward-Granger plated six runs in its final two at bats to steal a victory away from Webster City in a non-conference baseball game here Wednesday night.

The Hawks (2-0) laced three extra-base hits and collected nine hits in all in a 10-6 victory. WCHS (0-1) put up eight hits, all singles, but committed four errors in the field that led to five unearned runs.

“We had a couple of errors that came with a price, but it’s like I told the boys, we’ll get there,” WCHS head coach Adison Kehoe said. “From a first-game scenario, it’s a loss and it hurts a little bit, but at the same time it gave us things to look at and where we need to go in practice.”

Caleb Olson was on the hook for the loss on the mound. He came on in relief of starting pitcher Dylan Steen in the fourth inning and allowed three hits and six runs, only two of which were earned. He struck out five.

Steen whiffed four and gave up six hits and three earned runs in his three innings of work. He also walked three.

Steen and Hunter Hayden both ripped a pair of base hits for the Lynx. Romel Martinez, Riley Mishler and Corey Wagner all roped singles.

WCHS started fast with a three-run first inning courtesy of Mishler’s base hit to left field. Mishler finished with two runs batted in; Steen, Wagner and Jordan Tanner all had one RBI.

Cole Thiesen belted a pair of doubles and Bryce Achenbach had one for Woodward-Granger. Matt Rhodes picked up the win on the hill in a relief role. He fanned eight Lynx in four innings of work.
