WEBSTER CITY — Dave Brighton, the head boys’ golf coach at Webster City for the past six seasons, resigned his position on Thursday.

“My time at Webster City High School will always been cherished with many great memories of student/athletes, parents, staff and faculty,” Brighton said in his resignation letter to Webster City Schools Superintendent Mike Sherwood.

Brighton explained his reasons for departing the program he helped build into one of the state’s best. He has accepted a position with St. Mary’s Catholic in Storm Lake where he will serve as the athletic director/transportation director.

Under Brighton’s guidance, the WCHS boys’ golf program has put together a four-year run unmatched in the long history of Lynx athletics. After placing third at the Class 3A state tournament in 2014, WCHS reeled off back-to-back state championships in 2015 and 2016.

Brighton’s squad will be at Spring Valley Golf Course in Livermore this morning for the opening 18 holes of the state meet where the Lynx will be out to claim a third consecutive crown. Today’s round will begin at 10:30 a.m., while the final round is scheduled for Saturday morning at 8 a.m.

Brighton was named the 3A Coach of the Year in 2015 and again in 2016 by the Iowa Golf Coaches Association.

WCHS has also won three straight North Central Conference dual and tournament titles.

With five seniors on this year’s varsity roster, the program will embark on a rebuilding process next spring under a new coach. Nathan Ferrell, a sophomore and the 10th-ranked player in 3A this season, will serve as a quality building block. Ferrell played on the second of the two state title teams and serves as the team’s No. 2 player this spring.
