Unselfish Hawks blister Norsemen by 35 points

STORY CITY — Opponent now have to be asking themselves one question: Now what?

It seems that the more the opposition focus on all-state wing Collin Hill, the more the ninth-ranked (Class 2A) and unbeaten South Hamilton boys’ basketball team thrives.

For the second consecutive night, Hill was limited to just 15 points on Friday, but the Hawks continued to play an unselfish brand of basketball and the result was a 35-point thumping of Roland-Story, 68-33.

Collin Hill, younger brother Conner Hill and Marco Balderas took the court averaging a combined 45.4 points. They were limited to just 24 by the Norsemen, but that focus gave others the green light to pour it on.

Logan Klemp had his best outing of the season with 15 points and Cole Berg came off the bench to pour in 11. Logan Peters also cashed in for eight points in a HOIC contest that was never close.

“The thing I’m most proud of is how different players keep stepping up and how the whole team keeps sharing the ball,” South Hamilton head coach Nathan Hill said. “I’ve said all year, we’ll take what the defense gives us and the guys have really bought in.

“Logan Klemp … was probably the most aggressive he’s been all year. Then we got a big night out of Cole Berg. His confidence is really growing. He did a nice job of attacking the basket and took the shot when he was open.”

South Hamilton (9-0, 7-0 HOIC) shot 49 percent from the floor and piled up 24 assists on 27 baskets.

The Hill brothers and Balderas were more than happy to feed their teammates. They distributed 16 of those assists and Peters dished out five more. Collin Hill also had eight rebounds and three steals. Balderas yanked down six boards to go along with seven points, and Peters collected five caroms.

South Hamilton jumped out to a 19-7 lead after one quarter and owned a 30-20 advantage at the half. The Hawks then outscored Roland-Story (5-5, 3-5 HOIC) 38-13 over the final 16 minutes.

Austin Hobbs and Mitchell Shorkey both scored eight points for the Norsemen.
