Hawk girls hang with Roland-Story early, then falter in 61-28 loss

STORY CITY — Playing for the third time in four days, the South Hamilton girls’ basketball team gradually ran out of steam during a Heart of Iowa Conference contest against Roland-Story here Friday night.

A solid first quarter in which the Hawks hung with the Norse didn’t last, as Roland-Story outscored South Hamilton 51-18 over the final 27 minutes to cruise to a 61-28 victory.

“The girls fought so hard (Thursday night) against St. Edmond and Roland-Story really likes to get in your face on defense,” South Hamilton head coach Mark Henderson said. “We just didn’t have enough in the tank to battle through.”

There were plenty of positives, however. South Hamilton (0-10, 0-8 HOIC) shot a respectable 32 percent from the field and distributed 10 assists on 11 buckets. But 31 turnovers and a 16-4 edge at the free throw line for Roland-Story were glaring issues.

“In the second half their pressure really got to us,” Henderson said.

Roland-Story (7-3, 5-3 HOIC) collected 18 steals and rained in seven 3-pointers. Jenna Clark had her way with the Hawks zone defense, as she drained five triples and scored a game-high 17 points. Kylie Tjernagel buried two 3’s en route to 12 points and Juliann Clark joined her teammates in double figures with 10 points.

Bree Hodnefield put up nine points to pace South Hamilton. Marla Grubb added eight points and two steals and Paxton Wicks netted six points in a reserve role. Breanne Diersen dished out four assists and yanked down four rebounds to go along with two points. Anna Moss was held out of the scoring column, but the junior guard contributed in other ways with four rebounds and two steals.

Henderson knew it would be a process this season and he says his players are still eager to get into the win column.

“The girls are really working hard and competing right now,” he said. “We just need to continue to work on some of the basic fundamental things that make the difference between winning and losing.”
