Banged up Lynx fifth at Allie Morrison Duals

Olson stays blemish free on season, Williams joins him at 5-0; Doolittle drops showdown with two-time state champion

MARSHALLTOWN — Don’t look now, but Caleb Olson is quietly becoming a hammer in the Webster City wrestling lineup.

Yes, he’s only a sophomore at a weight that is usually flooded with upperclassmen. And, yes, he’s been on the mat only 11 times this season. But he’s made it look pretty easy.

The Lynx 220-pounder added five more victories to his resume and pushed his unblemished record to 11-0 at Saturday’s Allie Morrison Duals inside the Roundhouse. Zane Williams, a junior 170-pounder, matched Olson’s 5 for 5 effort to help 16th-ranked (Class 2A) WCHS (13-5) compile a 3-2 mark and place fifth in the loaded field.

No. 2-ranked (2A) Solon decked the competition to win the team title. The Spartans roughed up WCHS in pool action, 64-12. The Lynx also fell to eighth-ranked (3A) Johnston (42-36) before they ran off three consecutive wins over East Marshall/GMG (46-24), the Johnston JV (57-15) and Marshalltown (42-34).

“We had a lot of guys step up and do their parts for the team,” WCHS head coach Chad Hisler said. “We’ve got a lot of injuries right now and we just don’t have the depth that we’ve had in the past.”

Already without top-ranked heavyweight Cooper Lawson for the season due to a shoulder injury, WCHS also competed without 132-pounder Carson Hartnett and 160-pounder Hunter Hayes. It got only worse when senior 182-pounder Brandon Peck was slammed in the opening dual against Johnston; he was taken to a nearby hospital with a potential concussion and he’ll likely be lost for an undermined amount of time.

What was a constant were the buzzsaw efforts of Olson and Williams. Olson notched four first-period pins, three of them in one minute or less. Williams, who has won 12 straight matches and is 17-4 on the season, also racked up four pins and a major decision.

“Caleb and Zane are both doing a great job and they’re starting to step up and be leaders for our team,” Hisler said. “They just go out and take care of business.”

Trey Nelson (106) and second-ranked Drake Doolittle (120) both went 4-1.

Doolittle was on the short end of the day’s marquee match-up that pitted him against top-ranked and two-time state champion Bryce West of Solon. West, a senior who sports a career mark of 181-3, was simply overwhelming in a 16-3 major decision. Doolittle got to his legs on four occasions, but was never able to capitalize. At one point late in the match, Doolittle had West on his back for a brief moment, but West quickly turned the tables and scored the takedown.

“(West) is obviously really good,” Hisler said. “He was always in position and even when it looked like we had him in trouble, he was never in danger. But it was good for Drake to wrestle a good kid.”

Hisler says that this one outing won’t be the determining factor on whether Doolittle stays at 120 or cuts down to 113.

“I haven’t had a chance to sit down and talk to him about it, but he’s going to decide what he wants to do and where he has his best shot to do stuff.”

Doolittle rebounded from only his second loss of the season by bumping up to 126 to down seventh-ranked (2A) Nick Meling of East Marshall/GMB, 5-1.

WCHS was at its best in its first dual against Johnston and in the nightcap against Marshalltown.

Johnston jumped out to 39-6 lead after eight weights, but was forced to hold on late. Williams, Rocco Miller (195) and Olson all recorded falls during the late rush.

“We thought that might be 70-6, but we fought back and even had a shot,” Hisler said. “If we win one more match, maybe we could’ve beaten them. Sometimes when things start going bad, then the whole thing collapses, but it was good to see the guys fight.”

Marshalltown led 28-6 before WCHS won six of the final seven weights; the only loss during that stretch was on a forfeit.

Olson ignited the flurry by decking Andy Bitker in 42 seconds and sophomore Brady Auderer (132) closed it out 5-4 decision over Tristen Traylor.

“The Marshalltown dual came down to that last match with Brady and if he gets pinned we get beat,” Hisler said. “Brady wrestled probably the best match I’ve seen him wrestle.”

Bryer McCoy, in the lineup for the first time at heavyweight, aided the surge against the Bulldogs. He went 3-2 with three falls and his two losses were to rated foes. Miller, Luke Rohmiller (145) and Hank Ambrose (126) also claimed three wins.

Auderer collected a pair of wins. Cade Felts (138) and Harrison Hayes (152) had their arm raised once.

WCHS will return to North Central Conference duals on Thursday with a triangular against Clear Lake and St. Edmond in Clear Lake at 6 p.m.

Following Clarion-Goldfield-Dows’ stunning 35-28 loss to Algona last week, WCHS finds itself tied at the top of the NCC dual standings with the Cowboys. Two wins on Thursday would guarantee the Lynx of no worse than a share of the title.
