Lynx boys zone out in second quarter, pay hefty price

ALGONA — An eight-minute break at the defensive end of the court cost Webster City its two-game winning streak here Tuesday night.

Algona reeled off 24 points in the second quarter and outscored the Lynx by 16 during that stretch to build a 17-point halftime lead on its way to a 66-56 North Central Conference victory.

“They had some guys that stepped up and had some big nights, but we were just really poor defensively in the second quarter,” WCHS head coach Marty McKinney said. “We didn’t guard well in the post, we gave up some open 3’s … you’re not going to win games when you defend like that for a quarter.”

Algona (3-2, 1-1 NCC), which ended a three-game slide, shot 59 percent from the field (24 of 41), even better outside the arc (67 percent, 6 of 9). Riley Helmers poured in 21 points and Nick Stein had 15 in the win.

Despite a 37-20 deficit at the intermission, WCHS (2-2, 1-1 NCC) fought back into contention behind the offensive efficiency of junior point guard Jordan Tanner, who scored 19 of his game-high 26 points in the second half. He also collected seven rebounds and dished out four assists.

“Jordan had a great night,” McKinney said. “He’s really doing a nice job of attacking the basket and finishing with authority. He’s really strong with the basketball and he attacks the offensive glass and rebounds, too.”

WCHS pulled within five points in the fourth quarter, but the Bulldogs were able to regain the momentum at the free throw line with 12 makes down the stretch.

“Give our guys credit because they battled,” McKinney said. “We made a nice run, but just dug ourselves too big of a hole in the second quarter and couldn’t get out of it.”

Connor Shannon put up his second straight double-double — 14 points and 11 rebounds — in the loss. Tyler Bultena added six points, while Cameron Moen contributed five points and five assists. Noah McKinney hit a 3-pointer, distributed four assists and came up with two steals.

WCHS will trek north on Friday to tangle with Clarion-Goldfield-Dows in Clarion.
