Lynx clipped by four ranked teams at Johnston

JOHNSTON – The Webster City volleyball team concluded its regular season with a difficult stretch of matches at Saturday’s Johnston Invite.

The Lynx were swept, 2-0, by four ranked teams – No. 3 (5A) West Des Moines Valley, No. 5 (3A) Dike-New-Hartford, No. 10 (5A) West Des Moines Dowling and No. 13 (5A) Urbandale – that own a combined 134 victories on the season.

WCHS was beaten by Dike-New Hartford (21-11, 21-10), Urbandale (21-19, 21-11) and Dowling (21-18, 21-12) in pool play, and fell to Valley (25-18, 25-9) in the medal round.

As a team, the Lynx (14-14) hit just .061 as a team and finished with 46 kills. Olivia Myers led the way with 16, while Taylor Schnathorst and Kamry Dawson had seven each. Myers hit .149, tops among the front row attackers.

In addition to three kills, Courtney Lampman distributed 20 assists. Sarah Vogelbacher had 19.

Libero Gianna Gourley was solid throughout the tournament, as she recorded double-digit dig totals in all four matches and concluded the day with 41. Schnathorst registered 22 and Lampman chipped in 10.

Gourley was also the Lynx most effective server with eight of the team’s nine aces. Vogelbacher recorded the other ace.

WCHS will open up the postseason at home against Storm Lake in a 4A Region 1 quarterfinal on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The winner will face Boone in a regional semifinal on Tuesday, Oct. 25, in Webster City.
