WALK-OFF! Hegland belts 7th-inning HR, drives in 5 in SH win

JEWELL – It wasn’t officially Senior Night, but it really was on Monday at the Mike Penning Athletic Complex.

It was Alyssa Hegland’s game and everyone else was simply there to watch.

Hegland, the lone senior on the South Hamilton softball team’s roster, turned in a performance to remember, capped by a three-run walk-off home run to left-center in the Hawks’ 5-2 victory over Heart of Iowa Conference rival Roland-Story.

The celebration began when Hegland finally touched the plate. She may still be smiling.

“It was an exciting way to win it, especially for Alyssa,” South Hamilton head coach Rusty Wintermote said. “It cleared the fence by at least 20 feet … she just got a hold of it.”

It was Hegland’s second dinger of the season and it came with just one out in the bottom of the seventh as teammates Taylor Volkmann and Ady Wintermote watched from the bases.

“I didn’t think they were going to give her anything to hit … it looked to me like (Roland-Story pitcher Sydney Mathis) made a mistake. The catcher set up outside and she didn’t get it there,” Rusty Wintermote said.

Hegland drove in all five runs for South Hamilton (15-10, 8-5 HOIC). Roland-Story (10-14, 5-8 HOIC) owned a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth when Hegland belted a two-run base hit to tie the game at 2.

The Hawks owned an 8-6 edge in hits. Katie Johnson smacked two in three plate appearances; Volkmann, Ady Wintermote, Chloe Barkema and Alissa Moss all singled.

The Norsemen opened up the early lead with two unearned runs in the third inning. Ady Wintermote was in charge in the circle for the Hawks and finished with five strikeouts against just one walk.

South Hamilton’s official Senior Night took place last night when it hosted Greene County.
