STEEN FINDS HIS MOJO, TOSSES NO-NO

WEBSTER CITY – Last week was not kind to Dylan Steen, Webster City’s freshman pitcher who has shown flashes of a multiple-year ace of the staff in past appearances.

Against Humboldt last Wednesday – a third of an inning, three walks allowed and six runs given up.

One night later against Pocahontas Area – one inning of work, three more free passes and runs allowed.

He needed a good outing, for his confidence as much as anything.

He got it. And then some.

Putting his previous two outings in the rearview mirror, Steen came out firing on Wednesday and didn’t let up until he had his first career varsity no-hitter and 12 strikeouts in Webster City’s 10-0, 5-inning thumping of Clarion-Goldfield-Dows.

“I want to congratulate Dylan for pitching a no-hitter,” WCHS head coach Mark Fisher said. “He did a nice job of bouncing back with a good start, firing strikes and being aggressive.”

Steen threw 84 pitches, 51 of them strikes. He gave up three walks, but had command of all of his pitches and left CGD (0-11, 0-6 NCC) guessing.

The Lynx (4-8, 3-3 NCC), winners of two straight games, pounced on the Cowboys with four runs in the second inning and four more in the third. The contest ended when Ty Schnathorst laced a two-RBI double into the gap in the bottom of the fifth.

Schnathorst went 2 for 3 at the dish with three RBI. Cole Reigelsberger was perfect in three plate appearances and scored a pair of runs, and Corey Wagner belted two base hits and plated two runs. Max Hackbarth added a single and two RBI.

“We hit the ball much better … everyone got involved and we did a good job of getting hits with runners on as well,” Fisher said. “More than anything it was just a real good team effort and something for us to continue to build on.”

Seven different WCHS players had a hit and six scored at least one run. Romel Martinez, Bryan Ferrell and Collin Oswald all registered one base knock.

Following last night’s non-conference clash with Boone, WCHS will look to win a third consecutive conference game on Monday when it hosts Hampton-Dumont at Lynx Field. The first pitch is set for 7:30 p.m.

Boone survives to win 14th over feisty WCHS

BOONE – The Webster City baseball team gave Boone everything it wanted here last night, but the Toreadors managed to rally with two runs in the sixth inning to escape with a 4-3 victory.

Both teams finished with five hits.

“The loss aside, I saw this as our most complete and best game of the week,” WCHS head coach Mark Fisher said. “The improvement this week was evident, not just in our play on the field, but also in our effort and our mentality as a team.”

Cole Reigelsberger blasted a two-run home run in the fourth inning to put WCHS (4-10) up 3-0. Boone (14-2) cut the deficit to a single run in the bottom of the fourth frame.

Romel Martinez went 2 for 4 and drove in a run at the top of the Lynx order. Dylan Steen and Bryan Ferrell added singles.

Southpaw Max Hackbarth turned in his best performance on the mound in a losing effort. He struck out two and walked just one.
