Roller coaster ride continues for WCHS baseball in loss to Gaels

FORT DODGE – The season-long roller coaster ride that the Webster City baseball team has been stuck on took a sharp dive down a steep hill here Wednesday night.

Just one night after playing one of its better defensive games of the campaign in a 4-3, 9-inning victory over South Central Calhoun, WCHS took a step back in a 13-3, 5-inning North Central Conference loss to St. Edmond at the Rogers Sports Complex.

The Lynx (5-11, 3-5 NCC) committed six errors that led to six unearned runs for the Gaels (11-7, 4-4 NCC), who swept the two-game season series. St. Edmond erupted for six runs in the first inning and six more in the third.

“It’s the story of our season right now, we play exceptionally well (on Tuesday) and then (Wednesday night) we don’t show up mentally ready to play,” WCHS head coach Mark Fisher said. “Our defense struggled. Most of that was just a lack of focus that showed up during pregame.”

St. Edmond touched WCHS starter Dylan Steen for five hits and all 13 runs were charged to the freshman right-hander who took the loss. Bryan Ferrell came on in relief and allowed one hit.

“Steen pitched well, as did Ferrell,” Fisher said. “Both competed and gave us chances.”

Michael Sharkey had the game’s only extra-base hit, a double, and drove in three runs for the Gaels. Colin Flattery plated a game-high three runs.

Ty Schnathorst smacked two of the Lynx four hits. Steen and Cole Reigelsberger added singles. Riley Mishler and Noah McKinney drove in one run each.

Jason Setterdahl picked up the complete-game win on the bump. He fanned seven and walked three.
