Hits from everyone in lineup help keep Lynx flawless in NCC

ALGONA – Just two days removed from a disastrous day of play, the Webster City softball team rebounded nicely and stayed unbeaten in the North Central Conference here Monday night.

All nine players in the Lynx lineup recorded one hit, seven notched multiple hits and the team finished with 17 in all in an 11-6 victory over Algona.

WCHS was roughed up in three outings at Saturday’s Bondurant-Farrar tournament, but head coach Jess Howard said her club quickly put it in the rearview mirror.

“The girls did a great job of coming back strong,” she said. “You always wonder what a weekend like that will do to you, but we had a good practice (Monday) morning and they came out and played very well.”

WCHS (5-3, 5-0 NCC) led 7-0 after 21?2 innings and upped the edge to 11-1 after 31?2. Algona (1-5, 0-4 NCC) scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth and two more in the sixth to make the outcome respectable.

Cynthia Whitehill led the Lynx charge with three hits, including a double, and two RBI in four plate appearances. Clean-up hitter Cassidy Nerland also touched Bulldogs’ pitcher Brooke Fonley for a double and plated a game-high three runs. Nerland also lashed a single.

Allie Flaws, Haley Flaws, Kali Dawson, Chelsey Wagoner and Taylor Schnathorst all slapped two hits. Wagoner and Schnathorst both collected a RBI.

Courtney Lampman added a single and two RBI. Erin Bahrenfuss also singled.

“We did a good job with pitch selection and making sure we were hitting the pitch that worked best for us,” Howard said. “It helps when one person gets on … that confidence trickles down to the other batters.”

WCHS once again applied the pressure on the base paths with 13 steals. Allie and Haley Flaws both had three; Dawson, Wagoner and Schnathorst had two each.

Gabbi Hoversten was the beneficiary of the offensive outburst, as she picked up the win in the pitcher’s circle. She gave up 11 hits and struck out seven.

The NCC lead will be on the line this evening when WCHS welcomes 12th-ranked (Class 3A) Humboldt (8-1, 4-0 NCC) to Lynx Field. Play will get underway at 7:15 p.m.

“It’s a conference game and that’s always a must-win situation,” Howard said. “They’re obviously playing well in the conference too, so we’ve got to make sure we have our ‘A’ game if we want to beat them.”
