Fuhs boys cap careers with (what else?) all-state nods

WEBSTER CITY – They’re the two most decorated boys’ golfers in the history of the Webster City program. And with one final accolade, they may have cemented their legacies as the two best to ever play the game for the Lynx.

At the very least, they can make a compelling argument.

On the heels of back-to-back Class 3A state championships – a first for any Webster City sports program – senior twins Alec and Avery Fuhs were recently named to the all-state first team in the state’s largest class to play spring golf by the Iowa Golf Coaches Association.

Teammate Drew Fielder, a junior who will undoubtedly take the reins from the brothers in the spring of 2017, was honored with a second-team all-state nod.

WCHS and Gilbert, the third-place finisher at the state meet at Spring Valley Golf Course in Livermore last month, were the only two programs to boast three all-state players. State runner-up West Delaware, Williamsburg, MOC-Floyd Valley and Knoxville all earned two spots.

It’s the second consecutive first-team all-state accolade for Avery Fuhs. Alec Fuhs was a second-team choice in 2015.

Alec Fuhs became the holder of two distinguished milestones during his senior season, as he became the first Lynx player to ever play in four state tournaments and the first to claim one of the top two spots on the state leaderboard. He shared the runner-up position with fellow first-team all-stater Sam Sacquitne of Decorah, just one shot behind West Delaware senior Clayton Larson, another of the 10 first-team all-state players.

The 2016 success for Alec Fuhs came following a junior campaign in 2015 in which he finished third at the state tournament. He also shared 15th with his brother in 2014 when they helped the Lynx to a third-place state finish at the Ames Golf and Country Club.

The 2015 individual champion and 2016 runner-up at the North Central Conference tournament, Avery Fuhs also owns a pair of top-10 results at state. He was sixth as a junior and seventh as a senior.

The twins and fellow WCHS senior Sean Vogelbacher, a four-year varsity team member, will all continue their golf careers playing for Des Moines Area Community College in Boone.

Fielder, who will have the opportunity to join Alec Fuhs as a four-time state qualifier next spring, played in the No. 3 spot all season for the Lynx and occasionally got the better of the Fuhs boys. He was the team leader when the Lynx claimed the Carroll Kuemper Invitational title and slotted into third behind runner-up Alec Fuhs at the 3A sectional meet hosted by the Tournament Club of Iowa in Polk City.

Fielder owns finishes of 17th (freshman), 37th (sophomore) and 41st (junior) at the state tournament.
