Peck, doubles teams all win a match at districts

FORT DODGE – The Webster City boys’ tennis team picked up two doubles wins and a victory in singles, but couldn’t advance any further during yesterday’s Class 1A district tournament hosted by St. Edmond.

“Our kids competed in every match and had positive attitudes,” WCHS head coach Ben Jass said. “It was great to see our improvement from day one.”

Brandon Peck advanced on the front side of the singles tournament with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Ben Stanish of South Hardin. Peck bowed out in the next round following a 6-0, 6-2 loss to St. Edmond’s Patrick Bocken.

The Lynx doubles teams of Collin Hippen and Ty Mofle, and Kolton Gemmel and Steffen Chambers collected wins in the opening round.

Hippen and Mofle, the team’s two seniors, rallied from a 1-0 deficit to knock off Iowa Falls-Alden’s Jonathan VanLangen and Joseph Tibbs, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1. They then lost in straight sets in the next round.

“I will miss Mofle and Hippen,” Jass said. “They are great people and were fun to coach.”

Gemmel and Chambers won their match in straight sets before losing in similar fashion.

Sean Godfredsen also played singles for WCHS. He lost to Ryan Carson of Ballard, 6-2, 6-1.

Jass has a positive outlook for next season, but says it will ultimately be up to the players to put in the time on the courts.

“The future well depend on our kids playing a lot of tennis this summer and next fall,” he said.
