Usual Suspects

WEBSTER CITY – It’s always special, and probably a little emotional, when an athlete waves goodbye to the home crowd for the final time.

And when you’ve had the type of tack and field career that Allie Flaws has produced, well, let’s just say there’s extra motivation to end on a high note.

Consider that accomplished and then some.

Flaws was arguably at her best in front of the friendly faces that surrounded the Bob Buckley Track during last night’s Lynx Invitational. She won two individual gold medals and anchored two relays to runaway victories, as Webster City registered 131 points to place second behind pre-meet favorite Algona (184 points).

WCHS captured seven events titles in all and another five silver and bronze medals. The Lynx were in firm control of the runner-up spot throughout the night; Clarion-Goldfield-Dows (96) was a distance third, and AGWSR (51) was even further back in fourth.

Cassidy Nerland once again dominated the throwing events and Haley Flaws was the best of the bunch in the high jump.

But this night belonged to Allie Flaws.

A two-time state place winner in the 100-meter dash, she opened her evening by torching the field in 12.74 seconds. Less than 45 minutes later, she took the stick in the 4×200-meter relay even with Algona and buried the throttle.

Younger sister Haley was on the third leg, while Kali Dawson and Zoey Woodle opened the 4×200 (1:50.18).

Next up for Allie Flaws was an easy romp by more than one second in the 200 (27.38). She put a cap on the night by taking the 4×100 to gold alongside Dawson, Haley Flaws and Kenzie Garvey. Their winning time of 51.40 was an improvement of their season’s best time by more than one second.

“Allie had a great night, as did all of the seniors and the entire team really,” WCHS head coach Clint Howard said after his squad piled up 11 season’s best performances. “The girls have worked so hard and this is what we expect this time of year. We’re progressing well.”

Garvey had herself a banner Senior Night as well. She more than held her own on her leg of the 4×100 and also ran a personal-best 16.90 in the 100 hurdles to place second.

“Kenzie really had a great night,” Howard said. “She just keeps getting better and better every night.”

Nerland put up her best discus throw of 121 feet, 6 1/2 inches on her final attempt. She wasn’t at her best in the shot put, but her top toss of 36-0 was enough to get the job done.

Haley Flaws was nearly flawless on her way to high jump gold. In a one-on-one battle with the bar at 4-10, she got over on her second attempt to claim the win. She then took the bar up to 5-1 and just scraped it on her second of three attempts.

Haley Flaws added a bronze medal in the 100 (13.33).

Also claiming third-place results were Woodle in the long jump (15-2 1/4), as well as the 4×800 (11:03.13) and distance medley (4:46.29) relays.

Courtney Biere, Ann Marie LaSourd, Darian Peck and Ashley Johnson made up the 4×800. Chelsie Schwering, Abbey Ferrari, Stacey Meyer and Cassidy Bultena joined forces on the medley.

WCHS will now patiently wait for the official Drake Relays qualifiers, which will be released sometime today. The Lynx could potentially qualify in four events – Nerland in the shot put and discus, Flaws in the 100 and the 4×100.
