TCI jumps up and bites Hawks; Sogard, Quam lead

POLK CITY – More intimidating than it is difficult, particularly from the front Deacon tees, the outward nine at the Tournament Club of Iowa still managed to get the better of the South Hamilton boys’ golf team on Tuesday.

Random bad holes plagued the Hawks, who shot a 170 to finish third in an all-Heart of Iowa Conference five-team field.

“We had four guys that had quadruple bogeys and that’s kind of a microcosm of the season. We’re inconsistent,” South Hamilton head coach Mark Ullestad said. “We’ll play OK and then have one or two bad holes and that throws the round off.”

Nevada navigated the tight fairways and large greens the best with a meet-winning 158. Roland-Story (166) was second; Saydel (181) and North Polk (202) followed the Hawks in fourth and fifth.

Nevada’s Brayden Otto posted a 2-over par 38 to take the medalist honor by one stroke over three players – teammate Cole Gidel and the Roland-Story tandem of Grant Walline and Cole Matheason.

Nathan Sogard led South Hamilton with a 40. Landon Quam was solid with a 41, Colton Coy contributed a 44 and Jared Ullestad and Chase Jewell both shot 45.

“Landon shooting a 41 was a positive,” Mark Ullestad said. “I was happy to see that.”

South Hamilton will return home this afternoon to face HOIC preseason favorite Gilbert at the Jewell Golf and Country Club. The dual meet is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
