SPORTS BRIEFS

LYNX GIRLS THRIVE IN BREAKERS: The Webster City girls’ tennis team was at ease in tight situations yesterday at the WCHS courts, and that was the difference in a thrilling 5-4 victory over Grundy Center.

The Lynx went 4-2 in tiebreaker situations and claimed the victory when Megan Parkhill and Jayden Mathis pulled out a 9-8 win over the Spartans’ Cearra Aguon and Kaitlyn Ehrig in the No. 3 doubles match.

“This was a great season opener,” WCHS head coach Erica Munkel said. “It was perfectly matched and just a lot of fun playing them.

“I’m excited for the season to see where we can go.”

Courtney Lampman, Rihanna Wood and Sierra Anderson – the Lynx Nos. 1, 2 and 3 singles players – all picked up victories to set the tone.

After splitting the two sets, Lampman fended off Piper Johanns in the super tiebreak, 11-9. Wood was also pushed to a final tiebreaker, one she won 10-3, against Alexa Strickler. Anderson breezed by Aguon, 6-2, 6-1.

“My top three singles girls, they went out and dominated right away,” Munkel said. “Sierra, she didn’t even let the girl have a chance really.”

Lampman and Wood were also doubles winners.

WCHS will be back at home next Friday for a meet against Hampton-Dumont at 4:30 p.m.

GAELS TRIP UP LYNX BOYS: The Webster City boys’ tennis team earned two singles wins, but couldn’t apply enough pressure to get past St. Edmond yesterday in Fort Dodge.

The Gaels won four of the singles matches and swept all three doubles bouts for a 7-2 meet victory.

WCHS Nos. 5 and 6 players Sean Godfredsen and Ty Mofle came out on the right side of their matches. Godfredsen had no trouble disposing of Sam Blair, 10-3. Mofle needed just one more game to get by Tyler McCarville, 10-4.

Collin Hippen put u pa strong fight in the No. 3 singles match, but the Gaels’ Nick Doyle did enough to prevail, 10-7.

HAWKS SECOND AT TOURNEY: The South Hamilton boys’ golf team began to trend in the correct direction yesterday afternoon at Jester Park Golf Course, located just outside of Granger.

Playing its second 18-hole tournament of the week, the Hawks showed growth and vaulted up to second in the team standings with a 344 at the Grand View Christian Invite. Only 2015 Class 2A state champion Panorama (329) was better.

“It was a good day to play golf,” South Hamilton head coach Mark Ullestad said. “I was happy with how the guys played, but there’s a lot more there and that’s the encouraging part of this team. We’re just starting to scratch the potential that we can get to later in the year.”

Nathan Sogard led the team with an 83, the second-best score on the day. He settled for third after losing a three-hole playoff to Seth Appelseth of Panorama.

Colton Coy (85), Jared Ullestad (87) and Chase Jewell (89) all broke 90 for South Hamilton.

Reid Cobb, also of Panorama, won the individual title with a round of 79.

South Hamilton will travel to the Ames Golf and Country Club today for a Heart of Iowa Conference quadrangular with Gilbert, Nevada and North Polk.
