Sogard starts to find his game, Hawks win meet

JEWELL – Nathan Sogard was awfully glad to get home.

A member of South Hamilton’s 2014 Class 2A state championship team and an individual top-15 performer at the 2015 state meet, Sogard’s junior season hasn’t been all booming drives and birdie putts so far this spring.

But perhaps Tuesday’s successful tour around the Jewell Golf and Country Club will be the push in the right direction he needs.

Sogard turned in a 2-over par 38 to earn the medalist honor, as he led the Hawks to a team total of 165 and triangular victory over Roland-Story (171) and West Marshall (176).

Frustrated following a 92 at Monday’s West Marshall Invite, Sogard responded on his home track with a birdie and the always welcomed eagle when he chipped in on the par-5 seventh hole.

“It was encouraging to see Nathan have some success and see him play more up to his level,” South Hamilton head coach Mark Ullestad said. “He’s still not hitting it how Nathan can hit it, but it’s nice to see someone under 40.”

The entire South Hamilton club responded after a disappointing effort at Lincoln Valley Golf Course a day earlier. Five of the six players turned in rounds of 43 or better.

“It was nice to have some consistent scores in the low 40’s,” Ullestad said. “There are still a lot of strokes we can find without much work, so we just have to tighten things up.”

Luke Peters and Chase Jewell finished tied for third on the individual leaderboard with rounds of 42. One stroke back were teammates Jared Ullestad and Colton Coy.

Roland-Story’s Cole Matheason was the meet runner-up with a 40. Brady Petermeier and Hunter Pfantz both recorded a 43 to lead West Marshall.

South Hamilton will head to Panora on Saturday to take part in the Panorama Invitational at Lake Panorama National Golf Course. The highly-decorated field will include 2015 state champions Webster City (3A) and Panorama (2A).

“That’s going to be a big tourney,” Mark Ullestad said. “We’ll have a couple of days to practice and work on things and hopefully we can play well.”
