No. 15 Lynx run win streak to six

GARNER – Match by match, the 15th-ranked (Class 2A) Webster City boys’ soccer team has shown progression this spring and the Lynx have a sparkling record as proof.

With its lone loss in a shootout, WCHS (8-1) has now reeled off six consecutive victories and outscored those opponents 23-4 following Monday’s 6-1 road rout of Garner-Hayfield/Ventura.

Five players punched in goals and four collected assists, as the Lynx stormed out to a 3-0 halftime lead and led 5-0 before the Cardinals (4-4) finally got on the board. GHV entered the bout with a pair of double-digit scoring performances, but the WCHS defense was too good.

“We knew they had some athletes up top and they went with the wind in the first half, but our defense played well,” WCHS head coach Craig Signorin said. “Collin (Oswald) and Tyler (Bultena), they’re really getting it back there and then Connor (Foster) has the experience. They’re doing a really good job.”

The Lynx attack was equally dominant. Midfielder Landon Daniels led the way with a goal and two assists. Brandon Young scored a pair of goals, while Jerry Torres, Antonio Pinna and Brandon Hoveland all rifled the ball into the back of the net once.

Daniels leads the team in both goals (seven) and assists (five) on the season.

“We just had it (on Monday),” Signorin said. “We’re getting more consistent. The first four (matches) we were playing maybe one half of good soccer and now it’s developing into a whole game.”

Young, Torres and Daniels pushed WCHS to the 3-0 halftime cushion. Hoveland made it 4-0 less than two minutes into the second half and Pinna added to the edge just three minutes later.

GHV got off the schneid in the 52nd minute, but Young’s second goal off a Foster assist in the 53rd stopped any dream of a comeback.

WCHS out shot GHV 19-5, including 11-3 on frame. Lynx keeper Ashton High made two saves.

Signorin’s club will head back on the road on Thursday to face North Polk. The match from Alleman will begin at 5:30 p.m.
