Comets control singles and doubles, blank Lynx

WEBSTER CITY – There’s good news for Steffen Chambers: It really can’t get much tougher.

Just 24 hours after standing across the net from 2015 Class 1A state singles champion Sam Jones of Clear Lake, Chambers – Webster City’s No. 1 singles player – faced another mountain to climb against last spring’s 1A third-place finisher Nathan Griener of North Polk Tuesday afternoon at the WCHS courts.

Chambers was unable to take a game of either player, but the straight sets losses didn’t diminish the effort.

“I thought Steffen played really well against a state-caliber player,” Erica Munkel, the Lynx girls’ tennis coach who was pinch-hitting for boys’ coach Ben Jass on Tuesday, said.

The rest of the WCHS players were dealt similar outcomes, as North Polk swept all 18 sets en route to a 9-0 shutout victory.

“I saw a lot of great matches and a lot of really long points,” Munkel said. “A lot of the games went to deuce.”

Kolton Gemmel and Brandon Peck were both solid in the Nos. 3 and 4 singles matches. Gemmel dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision to Dustin Murray, while Peck was handed a 6-3, 6-3 setback by Ben Lehman.

North Polk controlled the doubles action and won 36 of 43 games.

Several WCHS junior varsity players tasted success. The doubles teams of Jon Dixon and Dylan Bowen, and Alex Hooker and Luke Bergeson were both winners. Dixon and Bowen also claimed singles victories.

The Lynx will head to Fort Dodge today to take on St. Edmond at 4:30 p.m.
