Barquist, Fisher and Peters earn gold for SH at Hawk Relays
JEWELL – The South Hamilton boys’ track and field team double-medaled twice and double-placed in five individual events on its way to a successful outing at its own Hawk Relays last night at the Mike Penning Athletic Complex.
A healthy dose of points in the field events, followed by standout efforts in the middle distance and distance races pushed South Hamilton to a team total of 98, second only behind meet champion Nevada (140 points). North Polk (89) was third, followed by Saydel (83), Fort Dodge St. Edmond (77) and Hampton-Dumont (60).
Thirty-two points came courtesy of the jumps and throws. Blake Barquist owned the long jump field with a gold-medal leap of 18 feet, 5 inches, and teammate Drake Thompson secured third (17-8). Thrower Logan Klemp picked up the silver in the discus (130-3) and bronze in the shot put (44-10), while Rylan Harris placed sixth in both (118-5 discus, 37-11 shot put).
Devon Fisher and Logan Peters joined Barquist as individual champions in front of the home crowd. Fisher beat a strong 800-meter field, including his brother Jared, with a winning time of 2 minutes, 6.10 seconds. Jared Fisher was back in third (2:08.30). Peters sat out of the 3,200 and instead used the additional energy to set the pace in the 1,600 en route to the victory in 4:56.30.
The Fisher brothers, Peters and Josiah Brown were their usual solid selves in the 4×800. They put up a clocking of 8:44.01, good enough to lead the field.
South Hamilton’s ninth medal, and fourth bronze, came from the quartet of Thompson, Brown, Peters and Trey Woodall in the 4×400 relay (3:51.30).
Nevada won a meet-best seven events, including one relay.
South Hamilton will be back on the track on Monday at the Bengal Relays in Gilbert. Field events will kick off the meet at 4:30 p.m. Running events are scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
