St. Edmond hands WCHS boys first NCC loss

FORT DODGE – Just as expected, a defensive battle of wills broke out inside the St. Edmond High School gymnasium Friday night.

Already one of the stingiest defenses in Class 3A, the Webster City boys’ basketball team held a third opponent to fewer than 40 points, but for the first time this season the Lynx were unable to crack the 40-point barrier themselves.

The result? A 37-36 St. Edmond (12-4, 8-3 NCC) victory and the first North Central Conference loss of the season for WCHS (12-2, 9-1 NCC).

Gaels’ forward Harrison Mayer drained a 3-pointer in the final minute to give his team the one-point win. The Lynx had a chance to win it on the final possession of the game, but came up short.

The loss dropped WCHS back into a first-place tie in the league with Algona. The Lynx have four NCC games remaining – at Clear Lake, home against Algona and two with Humboldt.

Avery Fuhs scored a game-high 15 points to go along with three assists and two steals in the loss. Colt Richardson and Landon Daniels both finished with eight points, and Alec Fuhs chipped in five. Usually a solid free-throw shooting team, WCHS managed to connect on just 50 percent of its attempts (4 of 8). St. Edmond outscored the Lynx 11-4 at the charity stripe.

Richardson collected a team-high eight rebounds. Alec Fuhs grabbed five.

Charlie Doyle paced the Gaels with nine.
