Lynx claim third straight Norsemen Duals title, improve to 14-0 all-time at tourney

STORY CITY – They may as well change the name of the Norsemen Duals to the Webster City Is Going To Win Duals.

Seriously, the name change deserves consideration. That’s how dominant the Lynx have been since they first entered the fray in 2014, and the latest installment was more of the same.

Relying on a stack of pins (19) and even more forfeits (22), ninth-ranked (Class 2A) WCHS blitzed four opponents and went unbeaten to win the Norsemen Duals for the third consecutive time on Saturday.

The Lynx took out Central Decatur (66-15), Hampton-Dumont (66-18), Saydel (66-12) and host Roland-Story (56-19) to improve to 21-2 on the season.

WCHS is 14-0 all-time at the tournament and has outscored its foes 848-218 – an average winning margin of 45 points per dual. The Lynx have never scored fewer than 51 points in a single dual and their closest confrontation was a 51-21 beat down of Hampton-Dumont back in 2014.

“It was a good day for us,” WCHS coach Chad Hisler said. “Now we’ll get back in the (practice) room and get ready for sectionals.”

The results were as close to a foregone conclusion as it can get before a single whistle was blown. With a full lineup of 14, WCHS received seven free wins from Central Decatur, five from Hampton-Dumont, nine from Saydel and one from Roland-Story.

Still, Hisler was happy with the results of his grapplers that actually got to compete.

“I liked how the guys stayed focused all day, especially since we knew going in about all of the forfeits and that the duals were probably over before they even started,” Hisler said.

Fifth-ranked (Class 2A) Drake Doolittle (113 pounds), Carson Hartnett (120), Cole Nokes (126), top-ranked Gavin Dinsdale (220) and second-ranked Cooper Lawson (285) all went 4-0. Cade Felts (132) compiled a 3-0 record.

Three other Lynx – Derick Khaleck (106), ninth-ranked Ryan Ferrari (160) and Caleb Olson (170) put up 3-1 marks.

WCHS went 43-13 as a team.

Doolittle’s day included a pin, a major decision and two forfeits. He piled up 18 takedowns in his two matches, giving him a single-season school record 146 during his freshman campaign. He passed former record holder Joey Powers (144 takedowns) late in his 22-9 major decision win over Roland-Story’s Zach Anderson.

Hisler enjoyed watching Felts feast on the success. After what has been a trying rookie season, he decked Central Decatur’s Elliot Ness in 3:35, as well as Hampton-Dumont’s Robert Alert in 1:50. His third win came on a forfeit.

“I thought Cade wrestled great all day,” Hisler said. “That was great to see and I was happy for him.”

Ferrari’s quest to become the 13th member of the WCHS 100 wins club will have to wait a few more days. Needing four wins to reach triple digits when the day began, he fell short when Saydel’s Dylan Coffin scored the only takedown of the bout in sudden victory for a 2-0 triumph.

Ferrari led the team in pins on the day with three, which gives him 99 career victories.

WCHS will head to Garner on Saturday for a 2A sectional tournament that is scheduled to begin at noon. The top two individuals at each of the 14 weights will advance to the district meet hosted by WCHS on Saturday, Feb. 13. The top two teams on Saturday will qualify for regional duals on Tuesday, Feb. 9.

Joining WCHS at the sectional will be Algona, Clarion-Goldfield-Dows, Forest City, Garner-Hayfield/Ventura and Humboldt.
