Peters wins 100th match, title; Lutter also nabs gold for the Hawks at HOIC

NEVADA – What’s better than grabbing a hold of one milestone? Clutching two, of course.

That’s what South Hamilton junior Luke Peters did on Saturday, as the fifth-ranked (Class 1A) 160-pound wrestler joined the 100 wins club during the semifinal round and then claimed a Heart of Iowa Conference championship one round later as an appreciative crowd applauded his efforts.

Peters, a No. 1 seed who improved to 38-1 on the season, became only the eighth South Hamilton grappler to reach triple digits in wins by decking Collins-Maxwell-Baxter’s Evan Bianchi just over one minute into the bout.

“It’s quite an accomplishment. Luke has worked hard this year and he’s earned every single one of those wins,” South Hamilton head coach Dan Brodie said. “He’s laser focused right now.”

Dylan Coffin of Saydel put up a tough enough challenge in the finals, but Peters was still able to roll to an 11-5 victory for his first conference title.

Heavyweight Zach Lutter gave the Hawks a second league championship at the end of the tournament. Also a top seed, Lutter flattened both of his opponents, including Archer McFadden of CMB in 2:30 in the gold-medal round.

“Zach’s focus has been exceptional,” Brodie said. “That was goal No. 1 – win the conference. Now goal No. 2 is to get to districts and see what happens.”

With just eight wrestlers in the lineup, South Hamilton finished back in seventh in the team race with 102 points. The Hawks were only four points out of fifth.

“I thought we wrestled well,” Brodie said. “We won some matches that maybe we shouldn’t have, but we also dropped some matches that we had a chance at.”

Roland-Story relied on its depth to accumulate 174 points and take home the league crown. Gilbert (160 1/2), Prairie City-Monroe (143 1/2), Nevada (126) and Saydel (106) rounded out the top five.

PCM won a tournament-high three individual crowns. Gilbert, Greene County and Roland-Story joined South Hamilton with two.

The Hawks won 13 of 27 matches on the day. Noah Lutter (170) had one of his better days on the season, as he went 3-1 and placed third. He fell to eventual champion Jarron Trausch of PCM in the semifinals, but fought back and registered consecutive pins on the backside of the bracket.

Charlie Reiter (132) went 2-2 and placed fourth for the Hawks. Brian Carroll (152) added a fifth-place finish.
