Lynx reach 10 wins by clamping down on Cadets

WEBSTER CITY – Behind a suffocating defense, particularly in the third quarter, the North Central Conference-leading Webster City boys’ basketball team stayed perfect amongst its league brethren inside its home gymnasium Tuesday night.

The Lynx limited Iowa Falls-Alden to 30 percent shooting from the field (11 of 37) and single-digit point totals in each of the four quarters in their 51-25 blowout of the Cadets.

Ahead 27-15 at the intermission, WCHS (10-1, 7-0 NCC) put the Cadets away with a 18-4 spurt in the third quarter. Sean Vogelbacher spearheaded the surge at the defensive end with three of his team-high four steals.

“In the third quarter we got after it defensively,” WCHS head coach Marty McKinney said. “Sean did great the whole game guarding (IF-A leading scorer Jace) Ites. He really dogged him all night … in the third quarter he made some really good hustle plays.”

After what McKinney felt was just an OK first half, the Lynx opened the third period on a 9-0 run.

Ites, who entered the contest averaging 16.5 points per game, was limited to just four by Vogelbacher. Weston Meyer led the Cadets (2-11, 0-8 NCC) with 12 points.

Alec Fuhs cashed in on 5 of 6 3-point shots and scored a game-high 17 points. The senior has led the Lynx in scoring in each of the past three games and four of five since the calendar turned to January.

“He is definitely stepping up his scoring and you kind of pick your poison with him because he’s so good off the dribble,” McKinney said of Alec Fuhs. “He did a good job of finding open spots and other guys did a good job of screening for him, too.”

Avery Fuhs finished with 12 points and Vogelbacher’s 10 gave WCHS three players in double figures. Vogelbacher and Avery Fuhs both yanked down five rebounds as well.

Colt Richardson added eight points for WCHS, which shot 43 percent from the floor (20 of 47).

The Lynx will look to stay unbeaten in the NCC and atop the standings on Friday when they make the short drive north to take on Clarion-Goldfield-Dows in Clarion.
