CLOSE TO PERFECTION

STORY CITY – Records are meant to be broken, even if it makes a coach feel uncomfortable as he watches it happen.

Webster City wrestling coach Chad Hisler tried to downplay his team’s 81-0 destruction of former North Central Conference rival Eagle Grove here Tuesday night; he’s not one to show up an opponent, certainly not one as respected in wrestling circles as the Eagles.

But Hisler couldn’t deny the quality performance of his patchwork lineup either, as the ninth-ranked (Class 2A) Lynx secured all 14 weights, 13 of them with maximum points, in blanking Eagle Grove in their opening dual at the triangular hosted by Roland-Story.

With two more new bodies in the lineup, WCHS followed it up with a convincing 54-27 thumping of the host Norsemen to improve to 17-2 on the season.

The victory over Eagle Grove broke the school records for team points in a dual – the old mark was 77 points – and margin of victory.

“We wrestled as well as we could. It was almost a perfect meet for us,” Hisler said. “There were a lot of good things that happened.”

And that’s an understatement.

Still without Luke Rohmiller and Carter Rholl at 132 and 145 pounds, respectively, WCHS also had to fill the holes left by 195-pounder Ashton High and second-ranked heavyweight Cooper Lawson.

Not a problem.

WCHS piled up eight pins and five victories via forfeit to build a 78-0 lead on Eagle Grove. Sophomore Rocco Miller bumped up from 182 to 195 and secured the shutout with a third-period rally against the Eagles’ Levi Hanson for a 3-2 victory.

“That was a good win for Rocco and it was nice to see all the guys get behind him,” Hisler said. “The kids all knew what the record was and they wanted it.”

Top-ranked 220-pounder Gavin Dinsdale jumped up to heavyweight against the Eagles and set the blowout in motion by notching four takedowns before decking Jon Mendoza with just 5 seconds remaining in the first period.

Derick Khaleck (106), Carson Hartnett (120), Gage Sadler (138), Brandon Peck (145), Zane Williams (152), Caleb Olson (170) and Hunter Hayes (182) all secured falls as well. Fifth-ranked Drake Doolittle (113), Cole Nokes (126), Cade Felts (132), ninth-ranked Ryan Ferrari (160) and James Cherry (220) were all forfeit winners.

Eagle Grove (5-12) moved 113-pounder Derek Graham up to 120 to avoid facing Doolittle, but that decision only motivated Hartnett. The WCHS sophomore notched a quick takedown and had Graham on his back for a significant portion of the first period before ending it in 1:50.

“Hartnett’s match, he lost to (Graham) at Perry last year and they bumped up to avoid Drake. But Hartnett wrestled really well and that was great to see,” Hisler said.

The lopsided outcome has become the norm in recent years. Over the last four meetings dating back to the 2012-13 season, WCHS has taken 54 of 56 weights and outscored Eagle Grove 306-9.

The Eagles had just three takedowns and scored only 12 match points on Tuesday.

Sophomore Bryer McCoy took over at heavyweight at the start of the Lynx dual against Roland-Story and got the ball rolling with a first-period pin. He racked up three takedowns in rapid succession and then flattened Josh Engelby in 57 seconds.

McCoy is just another example of the depth that WCHS possesses, Hisler said.

“Him and James Cherry and also Brandon Peck showed they’re varsity regulars on a lot of teams,” Hisler said. “I think both Cherry and McCoy could have fought for a spot in the finals at (the NCC) tournament. It’s good to have them in the room and it’s good to have them on a night like this when someone is sick.”

WCHS jumped out to a 24-0 lead on Roland-Story (20-6) – stretching its streak of victories to 19 on the night – before the Norsemen broke through, but the dual was never in doubt.

Williams ended a string of three consecutive losses with a pin at 152, and Ferrari and Olson followed suit. Nokes also won by fall earlier in the dual.

Roland-Story forfeited at five weights because of various absences in its lineup. The Norsemen had a 220-pounder in uniform, but with the dual out of hand they opted not to send him out to face Dinsdale in the finale.

Doolittle, who was coming off a victory over top-ranked (2A) Justin Portillo of Clarion-Goldfield-Dows in the finals of the NCC tournament on Saturday, was the only WCHS wrestler that was forced to watch both duals. He also received a forfeit against the Norsemen.

“This was a good night for us … this helps keep our competitive juices flowing and it helps us keep our weight in check,” Hisler said.

WCHS will return to Story City on Saturday for the Norsemen Duals. Wrestling will get underway at 10 a.m.
