Cadets rely on duo to hand Lynx girls a 53-47 loss

WEBSTER CITY – Still within shouting distance of the top of the North Central Conference standings when the night began, the Webster City girls’ basketball team suffered its most disappointing loss of the season Tuesday night.

A 27 percent shooting performance (17 of 62) and an inability to cover 3-point shooters were the root problems in a 53-47 loss to Iowa Falls-Alden.

The Cadets (4-11, 2-6 NCC) received 43 of their points from two players; Katie Meyer drained seven 3-pointers and scored a game-high 23, while Saje Ites dominated inside the paint and scored 20.

“It’s probably more anger than anything else,” WCHS head coach Nicole Muhlenbruch said. “That anger that (we) should have done better, that it should have been (our) game.”

Meyer canned four triples in the fourth quarter alone to help keep WCHS (5-8, 4-4 NCC) at bay.

“We worked a lot of our (Monday) practice on contesting the 3 because we felt that was our weaker area,” Muhlenbruch said. “It didn’t carry through to the game.”

Cassidy Bultena dropped in 16 points in a losing effort, and she also collected six rebounds. Chelsey Wagoner added nine points, Gabbi Hoversten finished with eight and Kayla Miller had six.

Cassidy Nerland contributed two points, eight rebounds and three steals for the Lynx.

WCHS will be in Clarion on Friday to face Clarion-Goldfield-Dows at 6:15 p.m.
