Something has to give when three unbeaten teams collide

WEBSTER CITY – A recently scheduled meet will be a good test for the Webster City wrestling team this evening when it heads to Huxley to meet Ballard and Carlisle in a double dual beginning at 5:30 p.m.

WCHS and Ballard will meet in the opening dual. The Lynx will then immediately wrestle Carlisle to finish out its night.

This wasn’t on the team’s original schedule, but WCHS wasn’t about to pass up the opportunity to get some more matches under its belt.

“We needed meets,” WCHS coach Chad Hisler said. “We lost a couple (duals) and we lost the Lynx Duals right after the New Year, and the conference has all of these double duals, so we had open dates. We called around and (Ballard) agreed to let us come down.”

All three teams will take the mat with 2-0 dual records. WCHS and Carlisle got a firsthand look at one another last weekend at the Dallas Center-Grimes Mustang Invite; The Lynx placed third, while the Wildcats wound up in eighth.

WCHS went 1-2 in matches against Carlisle grapplers in Grimes.

“It should be a good test,” Hisler said. “Ballard best us 34-31 at last year’s Lynx Duals and traditionally they’re good.”

WCHS will also be without senior 138-pounder Gage Sadler, who is sidelined because of illness. Sophomore Luke Rohmiller will move up one weight to take over at 138 and freshman Cade Felts will fill in at 132.

Three Lynx grapplers remain unbeaten; freshman Drake Doolittle (113), top-ranked senior Gavin Dinsdale (220) and fourth-ranked sophomore Cooper Lawson (285) are all 5-0. Senior Cole Nokes (126), Rohmiller and senior Carter Rholl (145) all own just one setback.

Rholl, who never cracked the varsity lineup a season ago, has been one of the early-season pleasant surprises.

“He’s been out (for wrestling), but he’s been behind tough kids,” Hisler said. “He’s working hard and hopefully he’s the next Antrez (Conley).”

Conley, who graduated in May, never made it into the WCHS lineup prior to his senior season. But he made the most of his one year and it was capped by a North Central Conference title at 170 pounds.

Following tonight’s tussles, the Lynx will begin preparations for Saturday’s Dick Kennedy Duals, which will begin at 10 a.m. inside the WCHS gymnasium.
