Hodnefield’s double-double helps Hawks rally and win for first time this season
JEWELL – An instrumental fourth quarter from Sydney Friest and a solid overall performance from Bree Hodnefield helped carry the South Hamilton girls’ basketball team to its first win of the season on Coach Jim Marsh Court Tuesday night.
Trailing 32-27 after three quarters and 34-31 with 2 minutes remaining in regulation, the Hawks were able to rally to secure a 37-35 victory over CMB.
“We did a great job of fighting our way back into the game twice,” South Hamilton head coach Tony Woodall said. “It was a great total team effort.”
CMB (1-6, 0-6 HOIC) led by as many as nine points in the opening half, only to watch South Hamilton (1-5, 1-5 HOIC) claw back to knot the game at 23 at intermission.
Friest, a freshman, hit her only two field goals and the Hawks only two shots in the fourth quarter, one of which was a 3-pointer. South Hamilton also connected on 5 of 10 free throws down the stretch to stave off the Raiders.
Hodnefield put together arguably the best game of her career with a double-double – 13 points and 14 rebounds. Diana Garcia netted eight points, Brittany Spindler finished with seven and Anna Moss added four.
South Hamilton’s defensive pressure led to 20 steals; Garcia (seven) and Moss (six) combined for 13 thefts.
Kathleen Baldwin led CMB with 10 points.
