A track meet breaks out, Hawks handle Rams

JEWELL – A frenzied pace by both South Hamilton and Greene County translated into plenty of points on Coach Jim Marsh Court Tuesday night.

South Hamilton just had an extra weapon.

Behind four players scoring in double figures, two of which produced double-doubles, the Hawks ever so slowly inched away from the Rams for a 76-67 Heart of Iowa Conference victory.

“It was a good win for us,” South Hamilton head coach Nathan Hill said. “Greene County is a good team and likes to push the tempo like we do. We were once again very unselfish and shared the ball.”

Collin Hill again was South Hamilton’s catalyst with 25 points, 10 rebounds and three assists. Younger brother Conner Hill and Marco Balderas both went off for 14 points, and Logan Klemp had his best game of the young season with 10 points and 10 boards.

Trey Tucker poured in 21 points for the Rams, but he needed 20 shots to get there. Tyler Beger (14) and Trey Hinote (13) scored in double digits as well.

South Hamilton (2-1, 1-1 HOIC) opened up a 21-16 lead after the first quarter. The Hawks outscored Greene County (1-2, 1-1 HOIC) by one, two and one over the final three periods.

South Hamilton outscored the Rams 23-8 at the free throw line, nine of those makes coming from Collin Hill.

Brady Berg and Landon Quam both added four points for the Hawks. Conner Hill had three steals and Balderas distributed three assists.

The Hawks will be on the road against Gilbert Friday night.
