Lynx struggle at Johnston Invite, go 0-4

JOHNSTON – It was a forgettable Saturday for the Webster City volleyball team at the Johnston Invitational.

An injury to a key player, a difficult schedule and under-par play all led to eight consecutive sets lost and an 0-4 day.

Fifth-ranked (Class 5A) Johnston (21-8, 21-11), sixth-ranked (2A) Dike-New Hartford (21-10, 21-7), Bondurant-Farrar (21-11, 21-18) and Pleasant Valley (21-12, 21-13) all handed WCHS losses.

“We just need to make sure we learn from the weekend,” WCHS head coach Jess Howard said. “We played our best (match) against Johnston.”

Middle hitter Olivia Myers sprained her ankle in the second match of the day against Dike-New Hartford and didn’t play in the final two matches.

Gabbi Hoversten led the Lynx (10-19) in the front with 12 kills and a .435 kill efficiency. Andi Anderson and Taylor Schnathorst both smacked seven kills.

WCHS accumulated 34 kills, but made the same amount of attack errors.

Hoversten also collected a team-best six blocks. Libero Gianna Gourley led the defense in the back row with 25 digs.

Schnathorst (19) and Courtney Lampman (14) combined to distribute 33 assists.

WCHS connected for just five service aces. Hoversten produced two of them.

The Lynx will hit the road this evening for their regular-season finale against North Central Conference rival Algona.
