Lynx rebound from loss by taking out Garrigan

WEBSTER CITY – With every slap through the block, Hannah Williams’ celebratory stomp got just a little bit louder. With every bomb down the line, her smile got just a little bit wider.

You better believe she had a good night on Thursday.

The Webster City senior attacker belted a season- and career-high 14 kills, 11 of them coming in the opening two sets, to lead the Lynx to a come-from-behind 3-1 victory over former North Central Conference rival Algona Garrigan inside the WCHS gymnasium.

It was apparent early on that Williams had the hot hand, and her teammates just kept feeding her the ball.

“I think this is one of the best performances she’s had in her career,” WCHS head coach Jess Howard said of Williams following the 29-31, 25-20, 25-12, 26-24 victory. “She did a good job of stepping up … she had her timing down, and the setters did a good job of realizing she had the hot hand.”

Williams had plenty of help, too. Kenzie Garvey and Taylor Schnathorst both battered nine kills, Andi Anderson drilled eight, Gabbi Hoversten finished with seven and Olivia Myers chipped in five in the middle.

Staying confident following a back-and-forth, energy-sapping first set was key to the victory, Howard said.

“The girls did a nice job of not letting (the first set) take the wind out of their sails,” she said. “With it being so close, I still thought the momentum was on our side a little bit.”

WCHS (9-15) had two set points in the opener, but was unable to seal the deal.

It was the Williams and Garvey show in the second set, as they ripped six and five kills, respectively, and the Lynx controlled play after falling behind early at 6-5.

A four-point run, which featured a pair of service aces from Courtney Lampman, gave WCHS the lead for good. Schnathorst went to her jump serve to lace the first of her five aces to give the Lynx a set point, and Hoversten finished it off with one of her three blocks.

Schnathorst threw in three aces during the runaway third set and one more, just for good measure, in the fourth.

Libero Gianna Gourley worked up a sweat in the back row. She fended off Garrigan (18-11) bomber Johanna Vaske fairly well and piled up a match-high 23 digs. Garvey was right behind her with 22 and Carly Jacobson added 10.

Schnathorst distributed 27 assists. Lampman collected 24.

WCHS will return to its home court on Tuesday for a league bout with Clear Lake. The varsity match is expected to get underway at 7:15 p.m.
