Hawks break even at tourney; Wintermote smacks 28 kills on day

HAMPTON – The South Hamilton volleyball team came out on top in the matches it was supposed to win, but was unable pull off an upset in two chances at Saturday’s Hampton-Dumont Invitational.

A 2-2 day left the Hawks at 15-8 overall heading into the final week of the regular season.

“It was a good tournament to test out some things,” South Hamilton head coach Rusty Wintermote said. “We served really well in the two matches we won and our quick offense, when we forced a lot of free balls back to us, worked really well.”

South Hamilton swept a pair of sets from Hampton-Dumont and South Hardin by identical scores (21-7, 2-11) to finish second in pool play.

No. 8-ranked (Class 4A) Charles City won the pool after knocking off the Hawks, 2-0 (21-16, 21-7). No. 11-ranked (2A) Denver ended the Hawks day, 2-0 (21-16, 21-17).

Charles City beat South Hamilton at its own game with a quick-hitting offense.

“We had trouble matching up with Charles City’s quick offense,” Wintermote said. “They kept beating us up on doubles.”

Denver’s Britta Weston lived up to her reputation as of the state’s premier hitters, as she piled up 20 kills for nearly half of her team’s 42 points. Weston is just one of three players in the state with more than 400 kills on the season.

Ady Wintermote lashed 28 kills and Alyssa Hegland finished with 18 in the tournament for the Hawks. They also combined for six blocks and 25 digs.

Alissa Moss again worked as the solo setter and distributed 42 assists. Younger sister Anna Moss registered 32 digs.

Katelyn Sogard came off the Hawks’ bench to drop in a pair of service aces.

South Hamilton will travel to Jefferson to face Greene County on Tuesday, and then will be at home for Senior Night on Thursday against CMB.
