A balanced attack keys WCHS sweep of Lions

WEBSTER CITY – Efficiency was down, but a balanced attack and a potent plan behind the service line provided the lift the Webster City volleyball team needed to find success Tuesday night inside its home gymnasium.

The Lynx hit just .109 as a team and yet it really didn’t put them in any danger, as they celebrated Senior Night with a three-set sweep of North Central Conference rival Clear Lake, 25-17,25-19, 25-20.

WCHS (10-15, 3-3 NCC) reached double digits in wins and got back to .500 in league play. Clear Lake (5-18, 0-5) remained at the back of the conference pack.

Lynx head coach Jess Howard was happy to head home with a quick win, but acknowledged her team wasn’t operating at full capacity.

“It felt like we were just a little out of sync with our rhythm offensively and defensively,” Howard said. “They had a lot of balls that came off their hands weird and we didn’t adjust well to where the balls were falling.”

Six players delivered multiple kills and seven got in on the fun. Andi Anderson led the group with seven kills, four of them coming in the second set when WCHS was forced to rally out of an early hole before taking control late. Kenzie Garvey, Olivia Myers, Taylor Schnathorst and Gabbi Hoversten all laced five. Hannah Williams slapped four on the outside.

Schnathorst, who split time between hitting and setting, and Courtney Lampman earned praise from Howard for the way they distributed the ball to the hitters. Lampman produced 18 assists and Schnathorst checked in with 13.

“We distributed the ball pretty evenly,” Howard said. “Our outsides are going to get more sets just due to that position, but the setters are doing a good job of keeping it evenly distributed.”

Hoversten and Myers both collected two blocks. A solo snuff on a ball out of system ended the second set and put WCHS in position to close it out. Anderson hammered three kills in a four-point stretch earlier in the set and ignited a 6-0 flurry that put the Lynx in control.

Williams and Hoversten both belted three kills in the final set. A kill off a block from the middle of the floor by Myers stopped a 5-0 Clear Lake run that had trimmed the Lynx lead down to two points, 22-20.

Aggressive serving worked to the Lynx advantage throughout. They tallied 12 aces, led by Garvey with four and Gourley and Hoversten with two each. A majority of the team’s eight service errors occurred during the second set.

“We’ve got to serve aggressively for us to be able to come out on top, but we’ve also got to serve consistently,” Howard said.

Gourley’s 19 digs were a team-high. Garvey and Schnathorst finished with four apiece.

WCHS will travel south to compete in the Johnston Invite on Saturday and will follow it up by going in the opposite direction on Monday for a league tussle with Algona in its regular season finale.
