SH’s first road test also an opportunity

JEWELL – Coming off back-to-back home games to start the season, the South Hamilton football team will hit the road for the first time looking to earn its first win this evening.

The Hawks (0-2, 0-1) will be in Manson to tackle Manson-Northwest Webster (1-2, 0-1) in a Class 1A District 7 showdown at 7 p.m.

Regrouping from a 48-0 beating at the hands of fifth-ranked Madrid a week ago will be paramount for South Hamilton, while the Cougars hope to build off a 12-6 triumph over Fort Dodge St. Edmond during Week 3.

Hawks’ head coach Corey Klemp expects his team to rebound and put forth a good effort.

“I think (the players) know what last week was. You didn’t need to have any football knowledge to see Madrid and know they are at a different level,” he said. “They’ve moved on from it.

“One of the good things (about the loss to Madrid) was we got a chance to look at a lot of different players. We got some other guys on that stage and were able to see what they could do.”

Getting their running game in motion will again be key for the Hawks, but they’ll face a Manson-Northwest Webster defense that showed last week just how stingy it can be. The Cougars limited St. Edmond all-state tailback T.J. O’Tool to just 32 yards on 20 carries in their 12-6 win.

“They’re an interesting team and they’re bigger than I thought they would be,” Klemp said of the Cougars. “That was a big win for them last week … their front four has really good size and they flow to the ball really well. So we’re going to look to stretch things a little bit so they don’t just sit everybody in the box.”

Logan Klemp leads the Hawks with 152 yards rushing and the fullback is expected to get quite a bit of work again this evening.

Hawks’ quarterback Blake Barquist could also asked to be a bigger part of the game plan. He has completed just 7 of 26 passes for 57 yards and has thrown four interceptions, but Corey Klemp thinks he made progress against Madrid.

“Blake Barquist statistically did not have a good night (against Madrid), but we liked the things confidence-wise he did,” he said. “He was setting his feet more and took some shots down the field. That has really translated into a good week of practice for him.”

Manson-Northwest Webster’s offense is centered around running back Keaton Wood, who ranks fourth in the district with 369 yards and three touchdowns. Wood averages 7.5 yards per carry.

The Cougars haven’t had a ton of success through the air either. Quarterback Ben Wignall has made good on just 6 of 31 passes for 69 yards, and he’s been picked off three times.
