Is a win over the Lions a big deal? Players say nope

WEBSTER CITY – The players knew the answers to the trivia questions, and how could they not?

They just didn’t care.

Leading up to Friday, when was the last time Webster City beat Clear Lake on the football field? How many straight games had the Lynx lost in the series?

The answers: 1996 and 16 games.

No. 8-ranked WCHS put an end to those streaks and in convincing fashion, 21-7, at Lynx Field in front of a large home crowd that stood to applaud its team as the final seconds ticked off the clock. But getting to 2-0 was what the players celebrated.

“I’m sure the alumni find it really cool and that’s great, but it’s just another win under our belt,” WCHS senior tailback Gavin Dinsdale said after rushing for a game-high 120 yards and one touchdown. “I’ve only played them three times.”

To a man, the players regurgitated the same message.

“We take every game the same. We didn’t play in most of the other games in the streak,” senior linebacker Ryan Ferrari said. “Right now we’re just 1-0 against them in our senior year and that’s all we care about.”

Said senior spinback Avery Fuhs: “Any win is a big win and beating Clear Lake is obviously big. But we didn’t play many of those other games. I’ve only played them twice.”

If the answers sound rehearsed, well, maybe they were. There’s a better than excellent probability that Lynx head coach Bob Howard repeated that mantra a few times in the days leading up to the game.

“They said exactly the right thing,” Howard said. “Clear Lake has a great program and we have an awful lot of respect for them. Beating them is a big deal, but beating any good program is a big deal.

“This is a great win for the 2015 team and it’s nice for those (former players) that feel a part of this. But it really didn’t have to do with anything else.”

Ferrari was still fully padded, covered in sweat, when he moved on from the win over Clear Lake. It was on to Carroll, which will present another stern test in Week 3.

“To us every game that week is the biggest game,”?he said. “So right now Carroll is on our radar and they’re the biggest game right now. We’re ready, and it’s exciting because we’re not the best we’re going to be. We’re just going to keep building.”
