Hawks run win streak to 8 with sweep

JEWELL – Down its most experienced setter, the South Hamilton volleyball team’s offense wasn’t always smooth, but still effective enough to keep its winning streak intact Tuesday night on Coach Jim Marsh Court.

Starting setter Alissa Moss was forced to watch because of a sprained ankle, but underclassmen Taylor Volkmann, Makayla Cavan and Lily Skartvedt helped to fill the void, as the Hawks buried Heart of Iowa Conference rival Prairie City-Monroe, 3-0, by scores of 25-20, 25-19, 25-19.

It was the eighth straight win for South Hamilton (10-4, 2-0 HOIC).

“(Tuesday night) was all about having the opportunity to try different rotations,” South Hamilton head coach Rusty Wintermote said. “The young setters, who haven’t had much of an opportunity to play in many varsity matches, came through with flying colors.”

It helps when the setters are distributing the ball to one of the conference’s predominant hitters.

Ady Wintermote continued to wail away from the outside and finished with 12 kills and a kill efficiency of .526. She ranks second in the HOIC in hitting percentage (.421) among players who have more than 20 kills on the season.

Ady Wintermote also collected four blocks, eight digs and four service aces.

Alyssa Hegland did her part in the front row as well with six kills and no errors in 12 chances. Taylor Ratzke and Chloe Barkema both smacked two kills.

Hegland (three), Barkema (three) and Ratzke (two) combined for eight blocks.

Volkmann handed out 10 assists, Cavan finished with six and Skartvedt added five.

Libero Anna Moss registered a match-high 15 digs. Hegland pitched in six and Ronnie Olson came off the bench to supply five.

South Hamilton terrorized PCM (2-11, 0-1 HOIC) from the behind the service line and piled up 15 aces. Hegland and Anna Moss both laced five.

The Hawks will stay at home tonight as they get set to face another league rival in Saydel at 6:30 p.m.
