Hawks run Ogden out of the gym in three sets

JEWELL – Comfortable back on its home court, the South Hamilton volleyball team was hangover-free from its disappointing 0-4 performance at Saturday’s Ames Invitational when it hosted and housed Ogden in a non-conference showdown Tuesday evening.

Five players contributed kills, and eight aces helped keep the Bulldogs back on their heels throughout in the Hawks’ 3-0 victory, 25-8, 25-14, 25-16.

“We really came out pretty strong, especially with the service,” South Hamilton head coach Rusty Wintermote said. “They struggled with their serve receive and we took advantage of that. They gave us a lot of free balls and we were able to get some kills.”

Just how at ease were the Hawks? Enough to allow Wintermote to alter with his lineup in the third set and he was able to see some new combinations that could benefit the team moving forward.

“The nice part was that we were able to change our rotation a little bit,” he said. “Alyssa Hegland really stepped up in the middle in the third and we moved Taylor Ratzke to the outside just in case injuries happen.”

While dad tinkered, daughter hammer away.

Ady Wintermote again was a force at net with eight kills in 15 swings – she finished with a kill efficiency of .400 – and a match high four aces. The junior also collected eight digs and a pair of blocks.

Working on the outside and the middle, Hegland ripped six kills to go along with seven digs and two blocks. Ratzke, Chloe Barkema and Abby Elsner all pitched in two kills. Ratzke, Barkema and Lily Skartvedt joined the block part with two a piece.

Alissa Moss (12) and Taylor Volkmann (6) combined to dish out 18 assists, and libero Anna Moss piled up 11 digs, three more than Ronnie Olson. Anna Moss also collected three aces.

“Our goal was to be assertive, to play with heart and to finish to 25 (points),” Rusty Wintermote said.

South Hamilton will take part in the South Central Calhoun Invite on Saturday.
