Hawks perfect, bring home gold

LAKE CITY – South Hamilton’s sole focus entering Saturday’s South Central Calhoun Invitational was summed up in one word.

Finish.

And finish the Hawks did.

A small hiccup early was overcome, as was a 1-0 deficit in the semifinals, as South Hamilton went a perfect 5-0 to win the tournament title.

The Hawks escaped against Audubon (17-21, 21-13, 15-13) in the semifinals and then disposed of IKM-Manning (21-9, 21-11) for the second time in the title bout. South Hamilton won the first meeting (21-19, 15-21, 15-10) in three sets and also beat Glidden-Ralston (21-15, 21-19) and Manson-Northwest Webster (21-8, 21-19).

“It was a good day and it was a day where our only goal was finishing each match, and we did that,” South Hamilton head coach Rusty Wintermote said after his club improved to 8-4 on the season. “The girls wanted to win the tournament, it was one of those mini-goals that they had at the beginning of the season. We really played well in that last match, but it built up throughout the day.”

Team leaders Alyssa Hegland, a senior, and Ady Wintermote, a junior, were again the catalysts with steady, dominant performances.

Ady Wintermote piled up 41 kills and hit .318, while Hegland produced 31 kills and a .288 kill efficiency. Taylor Ratzke (four), Chloe Barkema (three), Abby Elsner (three), Lily Skartvedt (two) and Alissa Moss (one) combined for 13 more kills.

Ady Wintermote and Alyssa Hegland also had 59 and 57 digs, respectively. Hegland was the team leader in service aces with seven and right behind her – yep, you guessed it – was Ady Wintermote with six.

Alissa Moss distributed 53 assists, while Taylor Volkmann chipped in 28.

“The whole tournament was about rhythm and we really distributed the ball well,” Rusty Wintermote said. “The setters did a nice job of getting the ball to the open hitter, and the hitters were in sync.”

Libero Anna Moss roamed the back row with success, which led to 67 digs.

South Hamilton will begin its Heart of Iowa Conference trek at home this evening against Gilbert. Varsity action will get underway at 6:30 p.m.
