Hawks bury Jaguars, Eagles in debut

JEWELL – Ady Wintermote’s volleyball talent has always been noticeable, dating back to her emergence in the South Hamilton lineup as a freshman.

But what she showcased Tuesday night in her junior season debut? That was next level stuff.

Her leap from the outside was higher. The sound of the ball as it connected with her hand was louder. The speed with which the ball traveled – and it traveled straight down – was faster. The statistics, which were always impressive, bordered on ridiculous.

Oh by the way, she’s added an intimidating power jump serve to her arsenal as well.

And South Hamilton was the beneficiary.

Wintermote blasted 24 kills and turned in a staggering .571 kill efficiency in wins over Southeast Valley (25-17, 22-25, 15-4) and Eagle Grove (25-13, 25-12) on Coach Jim Marsh Court. The Hawks (2-0) hit .424 and lashed 48 kills as a team, and were dominant in four of the five sets they played.

“There were some lulls, but there were a lot of highs,” South Hamilton head coach Rusty Wintermote said after his successful debut on the bench. “All of the girls have been taking coaching really well and they’ve just been a joy to coach.”

A two-time all-Heart of Iowa Conference hitter, Ady Wintermote lashed 17 kills against Southeast Valley and added seven more in just nine attempts in the sweep of Eagle Grove. She also swatted four aces in the nightcap.

A member of the Iowa Power Volleyball Alliance club team out of Ankeny, Ady Wintermote competed for an additional six months after the 2014 season ended, culminating with a trip to the national tournament in late June.

The move to the new team obviously paid off.

“It just seems to have clicked for me this year and I think it’s because my body finally matured,” she said. “I joined the new club team, too, and it’s a great club.”

Alyssa Hegland and Alissa Moss both contributed seven kills on the opening night. Moss and freshman Taylor Volkmann handled the setting duties and doled out 26 and 14 assists, respectively.

Chloe Barkema, another first-year varsity player, added five kills, and Taylor Ratzke put up four kills.

Wintermote and Moss combined for 12 blocks.

“The nice part about this debut is the girls came out in that first match not really knowing what they could do together,” Rusty Wintermote said. “The setters did a really nice job and it was nice to see some of the young kids complete things.”

Libero Anna Moss also played a pivotal role with 29 digs. Hegland chipped in 11.

“Anna Moss did a super job in both (matches) picking up the passes, and Ronnie Olson (five digs) did well when she played in the back row,” Rusty Wintermote said.

The Hawks lone hiccup came at the end of the second set against Southeast Valley (0-2), as the Jaguars rattled off the final five points.

But Hegland quickly put any doubts to rest with eight straight points off her serve to open the third and deciding set. Two of her five aces in the match came in the third set.

Two kills, followed by an ace by Alissa Moss gave the Hawks a match point, and the Jaguars sealed their own fate with a passing error.

South Hamilton piled up 22 aces in all on the night.

The Hawks bolted out to a quick 7-1 lead in the opening set against Eagle Grove, and the Eagles never seriously threatened.

One of Ratzke’s six aces on the night bumped the lead to 11-3. The Hawks led by as many as 13.

Eagle Grove’s only lead came at 1-0 in set No. 2, but it quickly swung in the Hawks favor.

A smoking lash from the left side of the floor down the line by Wintermote, followed by kills by Barkema and Hegland, upped the edge to 11-5. Wintermote blistered back-to-back aces to increase the cushion even more.

“In that last match, every point was fun,” Rusty Wintermote said. “I just want the girls to show heart out there and they did that.”

The smiles were a constant.

“It’s been so fun so far,” Ady Wintermote said. “Everyone wants to improve and everyone wants to win, so we all just click together. It’s been a great time.”

South Hamilton hopes to keep it rolling on Saturday when it takes part in the Ames Invitational. Play will get underway at 9 a.m.
