Sommerfeld, Lyon become first-time winners at Hamilton County Speedway

WEBSTER CITY – It was a holiday celebration Saturday night at the Hamilton County Speedway with two new faces in Victory Lane and Webster City’s own Griffith brothers, Ty and Ryan, claiming dual wins for the second time this season.

Duncombe driver Jeff Lyon took home his very first Stock Car trophy on the Fourth of July. He’ll likely remember the day and event forever.

Proving it pays to stay in the hunt, Lyon was running in third place behind the No. 58 of Matt Ring and the No. 7 of Jason Minnehan. As the three entered turn No. 4 on the final leg of the feature, Ring, running in second, attempted to scoot under Minnehan, but the two tangled and the No. 7 suffered a flat tire.

Ring scrambled across the finish line ahead of Minnehan. However, race officials docked Ring two spots for rough driving and Minnehan was disqualified for failing to report to the scales and tech area after the race.

And that left Lyon as the driver that took home the big prize. Jim Mitchell of Webster City slid up to second, with Ring taking the third spot.

Fort Dodge driver Bryce Sommerfeld jumped to the lead from his pole position in the Hobby Stock feature, and he stayed in front throughout the 16-lap race for the wire-to-wire win.

The Hobby Stock main event featured three caution restarts.

It was Sommerfeld’s first win in a Hobby Stock. Webster City’s Craig Graham moved all the way up from 10th to take the runner-up spot, while Fort Dodge’s Myles Michehl, a four-time winner this season, secured third.

Driving his familiar No. 12 Modified, local wheel man Mark Elliott gained the feature lead on lap No. 5 with Blairsburg racer Scott Olson tucked in right behind him. The two battled until mechanical problems forced Olson’s car to the pits on the 15th lap.

Elliott captured his second win of the season at the historic half-mile dirt track. Second place went to Iowa Falls driver Tyler Prochaska. Joel Rust, hailing from Grundy Center, was third.

The youngest of the Griffith brothers – that would be Ty – was the first to take top honors as he took his No. 56 Sport Mod to the front on the 10th lap from Brandon Toftee. Ty Griffith held off second-place finisher Jared VanDeest over the final few laps to claim his fifth track win of the season. Toftee took third.

It only took older brother Ryan Griffith four laps to claim the lead in the Late Model main event and he went on to take the checkers for the third time in 2015. He held off mid-race challenger Jason Hahne, who came form eighth to finish second. Jeremy Grady, Story City, started in the 10th slot, but roared ahead to finish third.

Marshalltown driver John Gill squeaked out his fourth win in the Sport Compact class over Manson’s Nick Hogan. Des Moines native Jacob Reiter was third.

Gill leads Hogan by a mere two points in the championship standings.

Seasonal points racing resumes on Saturday with hot laps beginning at 6:30 p.m. Only four races remain before the points champions will be crowned.
