Dave Brighton named Class 3A Coach of the Year

WEBSTER CITY – Following the most successful boys’ season, regardless of sport, in the history of Webster City athletics, golf coach Dave Brighton has received one of the state’s highest honors.

Brighton has been named the Class 3A Coach of the Year by the Iowa High School Golf Coaches Association. Junior players Avery and Alec Fuhs were named to the all-state first and second teams, respectively.

Brighton guided the Lynx to the 3A state title at Spring Valley Golf Course in Livermore in late May. It was the first boys’ state championship in school history.

WHCS went unbeaten throughout the regular season and never finished worse than second in any tournament. The Lynx were the wire-to-wire leaders at state and won by 11 strokes over runner-up Mount Vernon.

The Fuhs twins were the unquestioned on-course leaders, as they split time in the No. 1 spot in the lineup.

Avery Fuhs claimed the North Central Conference individual crown and tied for sixth-place at the state meet.

Alec Fuhs finished one shot in front of his brother and in a tie for third at state. He held the individual lead on the back 9, but fell two shots short of champion Dane Waldron of Clear Lake.

Waldron and Centerville senior Alex Moorman shared the 3A Player of the Year award.
