WINTERMOTE GOES YARD, HAWK WIN

At the plate and in the field, the South Hamilton softball team was clicking on all cylinders Friday evening at the Mike Penning Athletic Complex in Jewell.

Just how good were the Hawks? Never better, said head coach Laura Read.

“All the way around, I think it was one of the best games I’ve seen these girls play since I’ve been with them,” Read said after South Hamilton finished its 9-0 romp over Heart of Iowa Conference rival Colfax-Mingo. “Offensively I felt like we came out with a stronger mentality … defensively we made some really nice plays.”

The Hawks (1-1, 1-1 HOIC) put two runs on the board in the first inning and added three in the second to jump ahead 5-0.

Winning pitcher Ady Wintermote helped her own cause in the fourth with a two-run home run to left-center. Tiffany Jacobson added a two-run base hit in the sixth.

Kayla Lucas and Alyssa Hegland had equally strong outings at the dish; they were both 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI.

Kali Lucas contributed a pair of base knocks and Kayla Carlson had a single.

Colfax-Mingo (1-3, 0-2 HOIC) managed just two hits off Wintermote, who struck out two.

South Hamilton will face a stiff challenge this evening when it travels to Jefferson to face fifth-ranked (Class 3A) Greene County.
