Walks again stymie Lynx in 16-1 loss to Gaels

FORT DODGE – Finding the positives was a little tricky for the Webster City baseball team in the wake of its third loss in as many outings Wednesday evening at the Rogers Sports Complex.

After taking a 1-0 lead after one inning and being tied at 1 after two, the Lynx suffered through what had to feel like the never-ending frame, as St. Edmond scored 15 runs in the third for a 16-1, 4-inning North Central Conference victory.

The Gaels (3-2, 1-1 NCC) needed just eight hits in the game and only six in the marathon inning that saw them send 21 batters to the plate.

WCHS (0-3, 0-2 NCC) was as big a part of its own misery as the Gaels with a combined 10 walks and hit batters in the third. Three Lynx pitchers – Max Hackbarth, Avery Fuhs and Collin Oswald – combined to walk 10 in all.

“Walks continue to be a problem right now … we need to be more aggressive in the zone,” WCHS head coach Mark Fisher said. “With that said, we’ll learn from this and build off of this. We always knew that this was going to be a process and it wasn’t something we were going to build over night.”

Hackbarth, Cal Zahn and Cole Reigelsberger accounted for the Lynx three hits – all singles. Jordan Moen collected the team’s only RBI, scoring Zahn in the first.

Michael Sharkey and Logan Fear both went 2-for-3 for the Gaels. Sharkey laced a double and drove in three runs, while Fear found the gap for a triple and finished with four RBI.

FOREST CITY BLANKS LYNX: The Webster City baseball team dipped to 0-4 on the season following an 8-0 non-conference loss to Forest City last night in Forest City.

Still, head coach Mark Fisher says he saw improvements.

“We made good progress (last night),” he said. “(The pitchers) threw with much more control and even battled through a tight strike zone and a few jams.”

Eighth-grader Dylan Steen got the start on the bump for the Lynx and took the loss. Seth Crouthamel worked in relief.

Individual statistics were not available at press time.

WCHS will take part in the Roland-Story Tournament on Saturday.
